Portraits in “Painterly Style”

I took a break from comic work to try my hand at digital painting again. It’s been awhile, especially since I’ve been so focused on the cell-shading and line art technique, but it’s good to re-practice the brain and try “new” things.

Original Character – Sophiel

This is just a basic portrait of my main character Sophiel from the comic I’m currently working on (originally titled White Angel, it’s going to be a reboot and upgrade of a manga I was working on years ago – this time in color!). I used the Oil Paint brushes that come default with Clip Studio Paint, which is why it’s got that texture in some of the areas. Normally I use a custom “marker” brush that I’ve had forever, but I wanted to try something with a bolder feel (aka more opaque application of color).

These portraits below all use that marker brush though. It comes out smoother, but definitely requires more eye-dropper-tool usage to blend the colors evenly.
